Solo Exhibition
Dear Friends,
My Fulbright Grant has come to an end, and I am preparing to return to the US from Germany. This year has brought about many life changes, which I do not feel ready to place a value on. Overall it was a fantastic year; this has been a strange, productive, beautiful chapter in my life. I am sad to say farewell to my time in Germany, but I am so grateful for all of the wonderful memories and unforgettable experiences. I am grateful to my friends at Stiftung Insel Hombroich, the Münster Kunstakademie, Heinrich Heine University, and the Fulbright Commission for all the love, support, generosity and for helping me develop my work.
I would like to invite you all to the first solo exhibition of my work at Penn State Altoona. The exhibition of work, Changed Places, will run from September 12 until November 16, 2018. See you there!
Warmly,
Ryan
News Release
For Immediate Release:
ALTOONA – The exhibition of work, Changed Places, by Ryan Schroeder will run September 12 until November 16, 2018, in the McLanahan Gallery of the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts. A reception will be held 3-5 p.m. Wednesday, September 12, 2018 in the Titelman Study of the Center.
Schroeder received his MFA from the New York Academy of Art in 2015, and he received his B.F.A. from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2009. Schroeder was awarded a grant from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation in 2014, and he undertook a residency at Shanghai University during that year as well. In 2017, he was a STAR Fellow at the Guttenberg Arts Foundation, Guttenberg, New Jersey. Then he recently received a Fulbright U.S. Student Program award to Germany in the field of Art from the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board for the year of 2017-2018. Schroeder's work engages socio-economic realities, and more broadly, is a reflection on themes of abandonment and social issues in areas that are often overlooked. Schroeder has shown internationally and in the United States.
Changed Places reflects on presence in a current moment. Through Schroeder’s work, he feels that meaning is developed from the painting process. In his process, every object holds equal stance within the painting which will present a challenge for each piece of the painting to maintain dominance to the viewer. Although the works are partially autobiographical, he purposefully edits his paintings to exclude narratives in order allow the viewer to create their own perceptions.
The Galleries are open Monday – Thursday, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. and before and during all performances. For further information, call the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts at 814-949-5452 or visit the Penn State Altoona website at www.altoona.psu.edu.
