Voluntary and Civic Activities
Organization: Guttenberg Arts Foundation
Location: Guttenberg, NJ
The STAR Artist Fellowship is an arts foundation and residency program. As part of the fellowship, artists volunteer to help the community. I did so by teaching a free oil painting course for a group of students with various levels of training. The class covered the fundamentals of drawing a painting in oil. Students were given feedback and instruction based on individual needs and concerns. “Dead Palette” containing mutated versions of primary colors, plus white and black was assigned as means of exploring the idea of analogous colors as well as tone, hue, and intensity of color. In my class, we discussed critical discourse, contemporary art, and art theory. I critiqued student work, prompted, and engaged in-class discussion. I also directed students to relevant artists, concepts, and institutions. The Fellowship culminated in an exhibition open to the public, which I helped to curate and prepare.
Positions: STAR Artist Fellow, Teacher, and Artist
January 2016 - March 2016
Organization: The Post Contemporary
Location: Troy, NY
Description: The Post Contemporary is an interdisciplinary art center, and an artist residency program. Before my MFA I undertook this residency, during which time I curated an exhibition in the city of Troy. For the show, the city granted us access to the first 14 floors of an abandoned skyscraper. The show was publicized around town, and open to all who wished to participate. I showed a series of paintings I had made at the Troy Transfer Station County Waste and Recycling Facility. My fellow resident artists also filled the repurposed spaces with their work. The theme of the “Hint of Mint” was Eco-terrorism and social justice.

Ryan M Schroeder of New York received a Fulbright U.S. Student Program award to Germany in the field of Art from the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, 2017-2018. Schroeder lived and worked in Düsseldorf and Münster. There he created a body of work inspired by the Ghost Town of Immerath, and the Garzweiler Tagebau coal mines bordering Immerath, in the state of Nordrhein Westfalen. Between January-March, 2018, and also in August-October, 2016, Schroeder was the Guest Artist at Museum Insel Hombroich, Neuss Germany.
Schroeder received his MFA from the New York Academy of Art in 2015, and BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, 2009. He was a STAR Fellow at the Guttenberg Arts Foundation, Guttenberg, NJ, 2017. Schroeder was awarded a grant from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, 2014. In 2014 he undertook a residency at Shanghai University. Schroeder's work engages socio-economic realities, and more broadly, is a reflection on themes of abandonment and social issues in areas that are often overlooked. Schroeder has shown internationally and in the United States.
